Activities involving culture, heritage, sport and direct contact with nature
The Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche offer a wide range of possibilities to practise activities involving culture, heritage, sport and direct contact with nature.
The activities not only include the popular country hikes but also rock-climbing, canyoning, potholing, horse riding, bird, flower and animal watching and rural tourism. Several companies in the mountain region offer their services and the largest number of activities possible in this protected area.
HIKING AND SPECIFIC ROUTES
All along the mountain region there are about 200 kilometres of small and middle – distance paths signposted by the Regional Government of Andalusia. There are also another 700 kilometres, most of them approved by the Mountaineering Federation and a large number of public footpaths dependent on each village.
The extensive offer of footpaths makes this area a paradise for nature lovers who may require the services of guided trips or different route maps and guide books so they can go alone.
Some of the activities offered du-ring the year include wild mushroom-picking during the season or food lovers’ trips with visits to cheese and meat industries. You can even go on a trip to see the bellowing of deer during the mating season.
HORSE AND MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES
Another possibility the Natural Park offers you are horse rides along the old roads, canyons or cattle tracks which cross the region. Most villages have a great horse tradition and offer horse rides to the visitors, passing through the most beautiful places which they would miss if they went on foot. There are five riding schools in the mountain area. You can either go for an hour’s ride or spend a whole day on horseback. They also offer riding lessons and lodging both for the visitor or for those who want to come with their own horse.
If you prefer, you can cross the countryside on a mountain bike with specialized companies that rent bikes and organize trips from different points.
POTHOLING, ROCK-CLIMBING, CANYONING AND CANOEING
The landscape here is full of cavities, which is why there are caves all over the territory, some which haven’t even been explored yet. If you are interested, contact the services of specialized companies who will give you information about the visit as well as the equipment you will need to avoid accidents.
In this tourist package we cannot forget rock-climbing which is practised in ideal places such as Risco de Levante, in Santa Ana la Real, Navahermosa (Galaroza) or Aguafría (Almonaster la Real).
The most daring visitors also have their own particular space in the Park. Canyoning is practised in an adequate place between Cortelazor and Navahermosa. You can also practise canoeing in the Zufre and Aracena reservoir, archery in closed circuits, bird, flower or animal watching or even star-watching if you choose the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche for your next visit.
